Eavestrough Replacement · Kitchener
Eavestrough Replacement in Kitchener
Replacement is the right call when the trough itself has failed rather than a few hangers or seams. On Kitchener houses that falls into two groups, and they need different things.
There is a point at which patching an eavestrough stops making sense: when the metal has rusted through, when the seams have let go along most of the run, or when the system was too small and too lightly hung from the day it went up. Replacement means the whole run comes down, the fascia behind it gets looked at honestly, and a new system goes up that was designed for this roof rather than inherited from it.
The postwar houses: Forest Heights, Stanley Park, Centreville
Bungalows and side-splits through these neighbourhoods often still carry their original galvanized steel troughs or the first generation of sectional aluminum that replaced them. Steel trough rusts from the inside out, so it can look passable from the lawn and be paper-thin along the bottom. The seams in sectional runs were soldered or caulked and both give up with enough freeze-thaw. Behind the trough, the wood fascia has typically been wet for years, and that is the part that decides the scope: new trough hung into soft fascia pulls loose within a few winters. On these houses the replacement quote nearly always includes fascia work, either aluminum capping over sound boards or replacement of rotten sections, and often vented soffit where the original was closed in with no airflow.
The newer houses: Doon South, Huron Park, Fischer-Hallman
On a house built in the last fifteen years the trough is not old; it is simply what the builder hung. The pattern repeats across new subdivisions: thin-gauge aluminum, spike-and-ferrule nails rather than screwed hangers, long runs with a single undersized outlet, and downspouts dropped at whichever corner was shortest — frequently the one that discharges a metre from the neighbour's basement window. The fascia is usually fine. The job is sizing the system properly, adding outlets where a run needs them, and moving downspouts so the water lands on your own lawn with the two metres of open ground the City of Kitchener asks for, rather than against two foundations at once.
What replacement involves
- Removing the old trough, downspouts and hangers, and disposing of them. Steel is heavy and goes for recycling.
- Probing every metre of fascia and sub-fascia, and checking the drip edge where the shingles meet the trough. Missing or short drip edge lets water run behind the trough and is a common hidden cause of fascia rot.
- Fascia and soffit repair or capping as quoted, before anything new is hung.
- Forming and hanging new seamless trough at a set pitch, with outlets and downspouts placed to the plan agreed on site.
- Extensions or splash pads at every downspout, and a walk-round with you when it is done.
Old underground connections
Some older Kitchener houses have a downspout that runs into a pipe at grade. Before a new downspout is connected to it, you need to know where it goes. The Region of Waterloo's Sewer Use By-law prohibits roof water in the sanitary sewer, and a standpipe that leads to the house drain is a basement-flooding risk as well as a by-law problem. Where the pipe cannot be traced, the sound default is to cap it and discharge above grade with an extension.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know my steel eavestrough is done?
Rust staining on the fascia or the ground below the trough, a bottom that gives under a thumb, seams that drip in light rain, and a run that holds water after a storm are all signs the metal has gone. If it is original steel on a postwar house, it has done its service.
Can you reuse my existing downspouts?
Sometimes, if they are the right size and in the right place, but on a replacement they are usually the cheapest part of the system and the part most often in the wrong spot. Moving a downspout to a better discharge point is worth more than the saving from keeping the old one.
Do I have to be home?
For the site visit, yes, because the downspout positions are a conversation. For the installation itself, not necessarily, as long as there is access around the house and we have agreed the plan. We walk the finished job with you afterwards either way.
